Windsor builds things, and has for more than a century. Ford opened its first Windsor plant in 1904, and today Stellantis's Windsor Assembly Plant carries that heritage forward alongside NextStar Energy's EV battery operation, part of a manufacturing base that also includes tool, die and mould making shops feeding the automotive supply chain. Just across the water, the Windsor-Detroit corridor moves roughly $1 billion a day in trade between Canada and the U.S., making it one of the busiest international land border crossings in North America and putting freight, logistics and customs brokerage at the center of the local economy.
Much of that manufacturing strength runs through the more than 250 small and mid-sized tool, die and mould shops in the region, many of which still quote jobs, schedule production and track inventory using spreadsheets or software that was never built to talk to each other. That disconnect is getting harder to absorb: average U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods have climbed from roughly 0.1% to 5.8%, and Ontario's Financial Accountability Office projects Windsor as the hardest-hit city in the province, with 2026 employment expected to land 1.6% below what it would be without the tariffs. For shop owners, that pressure is pushing manual back-office and production-planning work toward automation simply to protect margins.
Cross-border operators face their own version of the same problem. With traffic now split between the Ambassador Bridge and the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge, freight and manufacturing firms need better visibility into shipments and tighter customs documentation, often through API or EDI integrations with carriers and brokers. At the same time, the local talent pipeline is tightening: St. Clair College has paused enrollment in several 2026 engineering-technology and IT programs, including Electrical Engineering Technician, Mechanical Technician and Chemical Laboratory Technician, even as its Windsor campus still enrolls more than 9,000 students across faculties like Engineering Technology & Skilled Trades and Business and I.T. Fewer graduates entering those fields means Windsor manufacturers and employers are increasingly short on the in-house developers and automation staff they'd need to build these systems themselves.
It isn't only manufacturing and freight. Windsor Regional Hospital, with more than 4,300 staff, and Caesars Windsor both run high-volume scheduling, booking and workforce-management operations on top of legacy administrative platforms built for a different scale. And across Downtown Windsor, Walkerville, Erie Street (Via Italia), Ottawa Street and Olde Sandwich Towne, the independent businesses that anchor those BIAs face the same basic question as the region's largest employers: how do we replace manual, disconnected processes with software that actually fits how we work?
